Most people think site prep starts with gravel or concrete. It doesn't. Before any of that goes down, the sod has to come out - and there's a real reason for it.

Grass, topsoil, and root systems hold moisture. They break down over time. If you build directly on top of that layer, the ground underneath keeps decomposing long after the job is done. That leads to uneven settling, cracked concrete, shifting gravel, and foundation headaches that are expensive to fix after the fact.

That's why we strip the sod first. Every time. Whether we're prepping a pad for a shop, barn, house, or driveway, getting down to solid, stable material is the starting point. It's not optional - it's the difference between a build that holds and one that gives you problems in a few years.

This is the kind of work that happens before anything looks impressive. It's not flashy. But skipping it is one of the most common mistakes people make when planning a new build on their property. Good site preparation and proper yard leveling at this stage sets up everything that comes after it to actually perform the way it should.

If you're planning a shop, barn, or any kind of structure and you're not sure whether your site has been prepped the right way, that's worth a conversation before the concrete truck ever shows up.
