Steep hillsides are one of those land clearing challenges that most equipment just isn't built to handle well. Traditional clearing methods - chainsaws, haul-away crews, burn piles - get expensive fast and can leave a slope exposed and vulnerable to erosion. Forestry mulching is a completely different approach, and on a job like this one, it really shows why.

This hillside was packed with cedar. Not a bad thing - cedar actually grinds up into a really attractive mulch. The forestry mulcher processes everything right on the spot, shredding trees and brush down into a thick layer of wood chips that stays put on the ground. No hauling, no burning, no bare dirt left behind. The slope ends up covered in a natural, even layer of mulch that actually helps hold moisture and resist erosion.

What makes this type of job tricky is the grade. Running a machine on a steep hillside takes real skill and the right equipment. Our CAT track machine handles these grades well - the tracks give it the footing it needs to work safely and stay productive all the way across the slope. You can't just send any piece of equipment up something like this and expect good results.

The cedar gives the finished surface a warmer, reddish tone that honestly looks better than a lot of people expect. It's a clean, finished result without a single load of debris hauled off the property. That's one of the biggest advantages of forestry mulching - everything that was growing there stays there, just in a much more manageable form.

If you've got a hillside, a brushy slope, or overgrown terrain that's been sitting untouched because it seemed too difficult to deal with, this is exactly the kind of work we do. Steep grades, dense cedar, tangled undergrowth - none of that is a dealbreaker when you have the right machine and the experience to run it.
