We scoped out a great project this week at a lake house property, and it's one of those jobs that's genuinely fun to plan. The yard is covered in surface rock - some of it scattered, some of it stacked up in rough piles that have been sitting there for who knows how long. Before anything useful can happen on this land, that rock has got to go.

Here's what we're working with: large slabs of limestone-type rock breaking through the surface across a wide stretch of the yard, sitting right between the house and where the usable outdoor space needs to be. Surface rock like this isn't just an eyesore - it blocks grading, kills any chance of a clean lawn, and makes the ground basically unusable for outdoor living. Rock busting and site prep is the starting point, and it's a big one.

Once the surface is cleared, we're building a 2-tier boulder retaining wall. Two tiers are the right call here because the grade drops in stages - one wall alone wouldn't be enough to hold the soil and create the flat, functional levels this homeowner needs. Done right, a tiered boulder wall doesn't just solve an erosion and grading problem. It also gives the property some serious character, especially on a lake house lot where the natural rugged look fits right in.

The measuring wheel you see is part of our scoping process. We walk the site, take accurate measurements, and map out exactly where each tier of wall will sit before we ever bring in equipment. That upfront planning is what keeps a job like this on track - no surprises mid-build, no wasted material, and no going back to fix what should've been figured out on day one.

We're fired up about this one and looking forward to getting after it for this homeowner. Projects with real site challenges like this are exactly what we do, and the end result is going to be a completely different yard.
